I didn’t grow up with The Wall Street Journal on the kitchen table growing up. There was no talk about stocks or bonds in my family…ever. As part of an immigrant family, I was raised thinking that stashing your cash under your mattress was the best place to keep your money. I never learned or thought about how to grow that money through investing.
When I was 18, I got a job on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I felt like a foreigner in my own country. The language of investing was a language I’d never heard before much less spoke. But the amazing thing about languages is that once you are immersed in them, you learn them pretty damn quickly. And, that’s what happened to me.
As someone who had never spoken a word and is now fluent, I can say that the crazy thing about the language of investing is that it’s…just not that serious. Yes, I know that it can sound scary. It can sound like gibberish. But, that’s only when you’re not familiar with the language. If you didn’t speak Mandarin or Arabic, you’d feel the same way. So, let me be your “Rosetta Stone.”
